What Does “Steady” Really Mean? (Hint: It’s Not About Balance)
We hear a lot about balance.
But if you're like me, balance often feels like a tightrope act, one wrong move and everything tumbles.
That’s why I’ve started using a different word: steady.
When I say "Scattered to Steady™," I’m not talking about perfect routines, spotless homes, or magical schedules.
I’m talking about something softer.
Something more real.
Something you can actually live.
Here’s what steady looks like in everyday life:
Taking a breath before reacting to chaos
Sitting down for a minute to figure out what’s next (without guilt)
Saying no to extras so you can say yes to what fills you up
Showing up for yourself, even when the day doesn’t go as planned
Just last week, someone in our Scattered to Steady™ Community told me,
“I’m finally giving myself permission to not be perfect. And that feels like freedom.”
And honestly? That sums it up.
Steady isn’t a destination.
It’s a way of moving through your day with more ease and intention.
Enneagram Insight: What Helps You Feel Steady?
If you’re familiar with the Enneagram, you might know that each type approaches life, and stress, a little differently. One helpful lens is what’s called your stance: how you tend to move through the world when you’re trying to get things done or manage pressure.
There are three core stances, and each one has its own version of what steady might look like:
The Assertive Stance (Types 3, 7, 8):
You move fast and push forward toward your goals. Your strength is momentum, but steady asks you to pause.
✔ Ask yourself: Is this aligned? Is this sustainable?
Steady isn’t stopping, it’s moving with intention.
The Withdrawn Stance (Types 4, 5, 9):
You tend to pull back to process, recharge, or protect your energy. Steady doesn’t mean forcing yourself to move faster, it means staying present.
✔ Can you stay in the room with yourself and others just a little longer?
The Compliant Stance (Types 1, 2, 6):
You often look outward, for rules, approval, or connection. You want to do it “right.”
✔ But steady grows when you start trusting your voice more than the noise around you.
This lens can be powerful because it reminds us: your version of steady might look very different from someone else’s and that’s okay.
